Boerner developed more than 60 floribundas rose cultivars during his 45-year career at Jackson & Perkins. Eleven Boerner rose cultivars were given the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) award.

Eugene Boerner served as a pilot during WWI and first planted his rose gardens in Illinois. During his career, he always wanted to create cold hardy rose, which make him famous for improvements to the Floribunda rose, hybridization and resilience.

Gene Boerner is a strong, hardy and disease resistant breed and is rarely without bloom. It is under the class of Floribunda with mild fragrance and bloom size around 2-3 inches. When it is full petals, there will be around 26 to 40 petals. Sun requirement for Gene Boerner is full sun and soil pH preferences is from pH 5.6 – 7.8. Flowering time is normally during spring, summer and Fall.
