API Steel Groups Are Not Quality Rankings
API Group I/II/III are classified by yield strength and carbon equivalent, not material quality.
➤Group I (≤280 MPa): good weldability for low-stress components
➤Group II (280-360 MPa): includes widely-used 345 MPa jacket steel, requires low-hydrogen welding
➤Group III (>360 MPa): high-strength but higher risk of weld cracking & fatigue; not automatically safer for critical joints.
Same Group Does Not Mean Identical Requirements
Even within Group II, two 345 MPa components can differ greatly. A regular jacket leg pipe and heavy-walled can-joint both belong to Group II. Yet the can-joint suffers severe stress concentration, demanding stricter impact toughness tests, welding procedures and NDE inspection.

SACS material cards only calculate structural capacity for Shipbuilding Steel Grades. It cannot check carbon equivalent, impact temperature or welding constraints. Valid simulation results do not equal completed material specification.
